Welcome to the Breathe Studio

Many people are interested in trying out a yoga class but are concerned that they don’t know enough about yoga to attend. This article will prepare you for a typical yoga class in our beautiful Breathe Studio at The Houstonian Club.

Before you arrive, know that the Breathe Studio is a no-shoe, no-phone, and fragrance-free zone. Clear your schedule, leave your phone and valuables in a secure place, and grab a towel on the way into the studio. Place your shoes in a cubby in the Yoga Lounge, located through the double doors off the Group Ex Lounge, which leads to Breathe Studio. Power down - not just your phones but also your conversations- lowering to a quieter, indoor voice as you shift into the more mindful studio space. If another class is finishing up in the studio, wait for those participants to exit before entering. There’s plenty of transition time between classes, so no need to hurry in.

Once inside, grab a mat. The Breathe Studio has top-of-the-line Manduka yoga mats available in two locations: by the door and across the studio by the windows. The red frog Manduka logo indicates the TOP of the mat, and wipes are available to clean mats before and after use. Alternatively, feel free to bring your own mat and consider storing it in the Breathe Studio, as long as it’s fully contained in a mat carrier and labeled with your name and contact info. Set the front edge of your mat on one of the light lotus flower floor stencils to position yourself evenly and spaciously from your neighbors. Props such as yoga blocks and bolsters are available along the back wall of the studio, and your instructor will indicate which props are recommended for the day's practice.

Remember to stay until the very end of class. If you need to leave early, please exit at least 10 minutes before the end of class to avoid disrupting the collective ending quiet time, known as savasana. Extend your yoga practice by mindfully cleaning and returning your mat and props before retrieving your shoes from the cubbies.

The Houstonian hosts over 50 yoga classes in a wide variety of formats each week-  there is something for everyone! Whether you practice yoga regularly or are now inspired to give it a try, we hope your feel more comfortable and confident stepping into our Breathe Studio!
