Is the trail calling your name? If you're planning an epic hiking adventure this summer (and we hope you are!), let’s make sure you're ready to hit the ground trekking with safety, comfort, and confidence.
Here are five must-know tips straight from experienced hikers and search and rescue teams to help you make the most of your time in the great outdoors:
1. Check the Weather
It might be sunny when you start out, but mountain weather can flip faster than you can say "thunderstorm.” Always check the forecast before you go and be ready for changes along the way.
2. Gear Up Right
Your gear can make or break your hike. Wear sturdy, well-broken-in shoes (blisters are not the vibe). Dress in layers, pack a rain jacket, and don’t forget sun protection like a hat and sunscreen.
3. Pack Some "Wait-A-While” Gear
Things don’t always go as planned. Maybe you take a wrong turn, someone rolls an ankle, or you’re just slower than expected. Pack a small daypack with:
- Water & snacks
- Basic first aid kit
- Emergency blanket
- Whistle
- Headlamp or flashlight
It’s a small load that could make a big difference.
4. Tell Someone Your Plan
Always let someone know where you’re going, who you’re with, and when you expect to be back. Don’t count on cell service to save the day—it’s spotty at best in many hiking areas.
5. Train for the Trail
Even if your hike is weeks away, it’s never too early to prep your body. Our awesome personal trainers are here to help you build strength, endurance, and confidence. Contact Fitness Director Heather Thompson at
