From Japan Back to the Gym Floor: What Is Your Why?

By Shae Murphy

Nobody feels 100% ready. Do it anyway.

I recently returned from Japan, where I competed internationally for the first time in more than five years. Playing 10 lacrosse games in four days challenged me physically and mentally, testing everything from endurance to confidence.

Somewhere along the way, I remembered why I was there. Not to be perfect or to prove anything to anyone, but because my body can still move, compete, and take on difficult challenges. Having that ability is not just an achievement; it's a privilege.

Whether you are stepping onto an international sports field or returning to the gym after a long break, growth comes down to three simple things: accountability, discipline, and purpose. Progress is not about feeling motivated every day. It's about showing up consistently, making small positive choices, and staying connected to the reason you started.

This experience also reinforced a few lessons:
  • Life doesn't slow down, and neither does the game.
  • Respect your body's timeline and don't rush recovery.
  • Setbacks are often opportunities to adapt and grow.
  • Your mindset matters more than you think.
  • We are often our own toughest critics.
You don't need to travel across the world to build resilience. Your challenge might be getting in one workout this week or taking the first step toward a larger goal. Either way, meaningful progress comes from showing up, even when conditions aren't perfect.

As a trainer, I believe in helping people build confidence and discover what they are truly capable of.

What is your why right now? If you would like support along the way, come find me in the fitness center. I would love to help.
