Fasting: Are There Any Benefits for Gut Health?

At a general glance, many claims have gained popularity suggesting we can reset our gut health using a "quick” fasting diet program. This trend has great intent, but it is not the full perspective. Restoring gut health is a two-fold approach, and a full reset and balance can take weeks or months.

Think of it as clearing debris away to then rebuild a foundation. First the reset, fasting reduces the workload on your body’s digestive system which changes the environment, therefore limiting bad bacteria’s ability to thrive. As these bad bacteria begin to decline, it provides the opportunity for good bacteria to spread out across your digestion pathway and for your digestive lining to heal. This will further aid in improved absorption of nutrients once a full diet is reintroduced.

Depending on fasting periods, the healing process of your digestive lining may vary due to medications, overall diet tolerances, and consistent exposure to irritants. Why is this important? It alters the body’s response to inflammation and over time improves your metabolic markers. Ideas on where to begin:
  1. Select the appropriate "fasting window” for your activity pattern
  2. Determine the best duration as prolonged periods may cause deficiencies
  3. Set your "restoration” plan, creating an intentional refeeding period

Fasting gives your gut a chance to reset, but what comes next determines if the reset lasts. The foundation of your gut health is newly defined once the community of beneficial bacteria is nourished. This is essential for supporting immunity, mental health, and nutrient balance. Feed your gut well, and it will return the favor with better digestion, increased energy, and greater resilience.
