Experiencing a fall can lead to a disabling injury, reducing quality of life, causing a fear of daily activities, and increasing healthcare costs. As we age, our risk of falling increases. Personal Trainer Craig Freeman specializes in proactive fall prevention with his clients at The Houstonian Club.
What could cause a fall? It’s a combination of many factors, which could include:
- A lack of strength, balance, or flexibility
- Dysfunction in walking mechanics
- A compromised neurological and/or cardiopulmonary system
What is the solution?
- Increase strength in the legs and core for a solid foundation.
- Increase strength in the arms and shoulders to absorb the impact if you fall.
- Work on balance. Good balance requires the use of multiple systems in the body, all of which are trainable. Balance exercises increase neuromuscular connections, enhancing the nervous system's ability to communicate with muscles and understand the position of your body in space.
- Improve flexibility. A lack of flexibility reduces your ability to take a big recovery step if you stumble or need to step over an obstacle.
- Work on endurance. Being able to walk and stand for extended periods will reduce fatigue, lowering the possibility of a fall.
It has been proven that individuals who fear falling are more likely to fall. A fall prevention program will increase strength, balance, flexibility, and give you confidence in performing daily tasks.
