Our Charitable Work

The Houstonian is committed to helping others in our community in the following ways:

Houston Food Bank – This non-profit organization has worked for more than two decades to develop an innovative, multifaceted system that can solve the hunger problem. Its programs include Meal Prep, Red Barrels and Food Rescue, each taking a different approach to preventing food waste, providing meals to people in need and helping Houstonians become viable members of their communities. Since 2001, The Houstonian has supported this program, when it began a Prepare Meals program with employees volunteering at kitchens. It also underwrites the annual Chef’s Dinner each spring.

Susan G. Komen Foundation – The Komen Foundation is the largest and most progressive grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists, and is dedicated to curing breast cancer at every stage, helping with diagnosis and treatment, risk factors and screening.  The Houstonian has underwritten the annual Survivor Party since 2000, held for those who have survived breast cancer, as well as donated overnight stays as door prizes for the event.

Multiple Sclerosis Society – The Lone Star Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, the largest chapter in terms of geography, population served and monies raised, provides direct services to people affected by MS and to fund research in the movement toward a world free of MS. For two years, The Houstonian has been a silver-level sponsor of the annual MS150 bicycle ride from Houston to Austin, and has underwritten the annual Tour of Champions Dinner. In addition, more than 100 employees and Club members participate in the event, with more than $1 million raised collectively.

Dress for Success Houston - The mission of Dress for Success Houston is to empower women to achieve economic independence by providing a network of support, professional attire and development tools to help women thrive in work and life. The Houstonian holds an annual suit drive during the first week in March and provides training and dietitian services for the Dress for Success Houston Marathon team each year.

Periwinkle Foundation – The Periwinkle Foundation enriches the lives of children with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses through camping and recreational programs. Doctors help the children heal physically; Periwinkle helps them heal emotionally. Since 1996, The Houstonian has underwritten the annual "Cycle for Life” event held at the Club, providing the facility and staff for the half-day competitive cycling event, which raises funds to send children to camp. Thirty-five teams of five participants each collect donations on calories riders burn throughout the day.

Share Our Strength®’s Taste of the Nation, Houston – As the nation’s largest and finest culinary benefit supporting the effort to end childhood hunger in America, Taste of the Nation raises funds for organizations that work to end childhood hunger, both in communities where Taste of the Nation events are held and in other communities across the country. Seventy percent of the money raised in Houston is granted to End Hunger Network and the Houston Food Bank. The Houstonian Hotel has underwritten this annual spring event since 1997.

Children's Assessment Center – Each Houstonian Holiday Market we collect holiday gifts and clothing for children of the Children's Assessment Center. The Houstonian Club is a drop-off site, enabling its members and employees to donate items to the children of the Children's Assessment Center.
